Hostelling International (HI) Chicago is America's 2nd largest hostel, and it is conveniently located in the heart of the city. HI Chicago is a part of a nonprofit membership organization founded in 1934 to promote international understanding of the world and its people through hostelling. With over 500 beds and over 95,000 overnights provided to travelers from all around the world the amount of energy consumed is undeniably large. At this scale, the implementation of 100 percent wind renewable energy credits over the past two years is very significant and exemplifies an active role in how we affect our surroundings.
“The Chicago Hostel is striving to be on the cutting edge of sustainability. Being a responsible steward of our environment, as well as, maximizing our energy consumption efficiency can and go hand-in-hand with the Hostel’s sustainability efforts.” says Paul Coley, General Manager at the Hostelling International Chicago Hostel. “With such efforts all these improvements add up in a big way. For our company these types of endeavors are important and necessary steps in order to continue to promote future exploration of the world through hostelling.”
