Lifeway is the country’s leading manufacturer of kefir, with multiple flavors and varieties that include lowfat, whole milk, organic versions and a children's line. The company purchases renewable energy credits (RECs) equal to 100% of the electricity used to produce their products. This avoids over 2.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide pollution, roughly the same as planting 335 acres of trees or removing 222 cars from the road.
"As a natural foods company, we have always been committed to clean, safe and healthy eating,” says Julie Smolyansky, CEO. “The purchase of renewable energy can help create a clean, safe and healthy environment for Chicago's communities. This aligns our nutritional goals with our environmental goals, demonstrates good corporate citizenship, and shows our customers that we are dedicated to their health as well as that of the planet because the two are so closely intertwined." She continues: “We enjoy supporting green energy initiatives because it’s something we strongly believe in. Having the opportunity to participate in such a noble cause is its own reward. For Lifeway, going green is not just an idle mantra. It is something we back with actions on a daily basis.”
Smolyansky suggests that there are many different ways for a company or organization to get involved in green and sustainable projects, and that beginning a relationship with one organization can open many doors and future opportunities.
