| Partner Profile Stevens Pass Resort is a day-use ski and snowboard area located 80 miles northeast of Seattle, WA, with 400,000 visits annually and seasonal staff of 900. Stevens Pass Resort has committed to a multi-year contract with a non-profit renewable energy certificate provider that offsets their annual electricity and propane use, and invests that money solely into the development of clean, renewable, and sustainable wind-power from across the West. Stevens Pass Resort is aware that combating the effects of global warming is critical for the future of entire ski and snowboard industry and seeks to lead by example in that arena, governed by their environmental plan. The program has led to customer appreciation for making a difference, and has served as good tool to educate their guests on sustainability issues. Stevens Pass Resort also offers their customers the option to purchase their own energy credits for $2 a visit, serving to offset their vehicle travel up to the resort. The company also benefits from the marketing differentiation that this business choice has provided, and the visibility gained from leading the northwest ski and snowboard resort industry in energy sustainability driven by global warming concerns. "Purchasing renewable carbon offsets from sustainable wind-power sources allows our business to directly address the impacts of global warming and a shrinking snowpack. We can't afford not to take this seriously," says John Meriwether, Director of Planning and Environment. | |
