The Brick Companies, a privately held company based in Edgewater, Maryland, owns, develops and manages commercial, residential and recreational properties in and around the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. The company is purchasing 100% of its electricity from WGES Green-e certified wind power for its Maryland properties. Additionally, Queenstown Harbor Golf Course has installed a solar array that supplies 30% of its energy. "Renewable energy is an integral part of attaining our strategic objective of building on our environmental stewardship through socially conscious management and development of land that enhances quality of life," says Lex Birney, CEO. In addition to its use of green power, the Brick Companies have undertaken a host of other environmental initiatives, including installing at its headquarters the first living roof in Anne Arundel County. The company feels that the biggest benefit of its commitment to green power is the staff's excitement about the direction the company is going, the good will its efforts have generated among its tenants, and the added pride in the knowledge that its actions directly benefit the environment, and specifically the Chesapeake Bay.
