The Catholic University of America, located in Washington, DC, has been aggressively pursuing energy conservation for the past twelve years and decided in August 2002 to re-invest some of the resulting savings into the purchase of green power. The University currently purchases wind power to supply a significant portion of the electricity used on campus. In 2010, Catholic installed 1,100 solar panels, which is the largest solar installation in the DC Metro area. An additional 500 solar panels were installed in January 2011. In August, 2012, CUA added an additional 1000 panels, now possessing 2600 solar panels on 7 different buildings. CUA is the largest solar installation in the District of Columbia at 677 kw of installed capacity and having 100 percent renewable energy certificates (RECs) with its purchased electricity.
