  • Urban Heat Island Outreach Materials lists brochures, fact sheets, and other outreach materials on urban heat island formation, planning for excessive heat events, smart growth, and more.
  • Excessive Heat Events Guidebook helps officials plan for and respond to excessive heat events by highlighting best practices that have been employed to save lives during excessive heat events in different urban areas and providing a menu of options that officials can use to respond to these events in their communities.

  • Climate Change and Extreme Heat Events (PDF) (20 pp, 3.3MB), published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, describes extreme heat events, how they affect public health, and how to prepare for and respond to extreme heat events. It also explains how the frequency, duration, and severity of extreme heat events are increasing as a result of climate change, and includes links to local program and real-world examples from across the country.

Scientific Papers and Presentations

  • Science Corner contains a list of reports and research papers on urban heat islands, including impacts of the heat island effect, case studies, potential benefits of mitigation strategies, and more.

  • Mitigation Impact Screening Tool (MIST) is a software tool that estimates the impacts of urban heat island mitigation strategies on urban air temperatures, ozone, and energy consumption. Please note that MIST was shut down on July 1, 2014. The data and assumptions used in the tool were last updated in 2005, and its outputs may no longer be accurate or relevant. If you would like to be notified of future developments, including any plans to develop an updated version, please subscribe to EPA’s Heat Island newsletter.
