Presentation by Dr. James Voogt, University of Western Ontario.
- How Researchers Measure Urban Heat Islands (PDF, 3,180KB)
Dr. James Voogt explained the different types of urban heat islands and examined the most common methods researchers use to study them, including direct measurement of canopy layer heat islands, thermal remote sensing of surface heat islands, and modeling.
Presentation by Dr. Nicholas Goodwin, University of British Columbia.
- Remote Sensing of Land Cover in Urban Environments (PDF, 1,243KB)
Dr. Nicholas Goodwin provided an overview of the types of land cover mapping applications that are possible using passive optical and LiDAR technologies as well as introduced the basic concepts relating to these two different remote sensing technologies.
Presentation by Jason Samenow, US Environmental Protection Agency.
Jason Samenow presented an overview of urban heat and health challenges and EPA's efforts to address them, with a focus on the development of EPA's Excessive Heat Events Guidebook.
