David G. Hawkins

David G. Hawkins has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the Environmental Protection Agency's new Assistant Administrator for Air and Waste Management.
Hawkins, 34, was a staff attorney with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) in Washington, D.C. before he was nominated for the position by President Carter on September 2.
EPA Administrator Douglas Costle said, "Dave's experience with environmental issues at NRDC, particularly in the area of air pollution is a definite asset to this Agency. The new Clean Air Act Amendments and future noise and radiation regulations will mean tough, hard-working days ahead and I am confident Dave will do an excellent job."
From 1971-77, Hawkins' position with the NRDC involved intensive work with environmental issues, specializing in industrial air pollution control, transportation and indirect source controls, and attainment of air quality standards. He was directly involved in regulatory proceedings of the EPA and other Federal agencies as well as testifying frequently before Congress.
In 1975 and 1976, Mr. Hawkins served as a member of two advisory committees of the Federal Energy Administration: the Transportation Advisory Committee and the Environmental Advisory Committee. In addition, Mr. Hawkins worked as resource group member to the National Research Council's Committee on Nuclear and Alternative Energy Systems.
Hawkins was also a staff attorney with the Stern Community Law Firm in 1970-71, a foundation-supported public interest group in Washington, D.C., with emphasis on environmental cases.
In 1965, he received a B.A. in English from Yale and a J.D. from Columbia University Law School in 1970 (Magna Cum Laude).
Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Mr. Hawkins is married and lives in Washington, D.C.
