Jonathan Z. Cannon
Biography
[EPA press release - November 17, 1993]
The U.S. Senate recently confirmed Jonathan Z. Cannon as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Chief Financial Officer and its Assistant Administrator for the Office of Administration and Resources Management. Because these responsibilities are separate but integral to the internal management of the Agency, the Senate voted at two different times on his nomination for the posts.
EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner said, "I am very pleased the Senate has given its approval to Jonathan Cannon. EPA faces serious challenges from Congress to do more for public health and the environment with fewer resources. As a result of his extensive experience at EPA, Jonathan Cannon is remarkable well prepared to assume these responsibilities."
Jonathan Cannon has worked in a variety of positions at EPA since 1987, most recently as a Special Advisor to the Administrator, Acting Deputy Administrator and Acting Assistant Administrator for the Office of Policy, Planning and Evaluation. After his initial tenure at the EPA from 1987-89, he left briefly and worked as a partner at the law firm of Beveridge & Diamond, with which he had been affiliated before entering public service. He was a professor of environmental law at the University of Virginia School of Law and the Washington & Lee Law School, and was a law clerk to the U.S. Court of Appeals Judge David Baselon. A graduate of William College, he studied at Worcester College, Oxford, and holds a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
