Matthew N. Novick

Biography

Matthew N. Novick, a government budget and fiscal expert, has been nominated by President Reagan to be Inspector General of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He will be responsible for managing audits and investigations to insure the fiscal integrity of the Agency's operations.

"Fiscal integrity is a cornerstone of efficient government," said Anne M. Gorsuch, EPA's Administrator. "Mr. Novick's expertise and experience will play an important role in ensuring that EPA's programs meet the highest standards of efficiency, honesty and effectiveness."

The Agency's Inspector General is responsible for managing audits and investigations designed to detect and prevent fraud and abuse in order to promote greater effectiveness and economy. Novick will also bring such problems to the attention of Congress and top EPA officials and recommend needed corrective action.

Since 1980 Novick, 47, has been Director of the Office of Technical Assistance at the U.S. Department of the Interior. He was Deputy Director for Finance and Administration with the Department from 1978 to 1980. Before that, he was Financial Manager and Budget Officer under the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Management in 1974-1978. He was also budget analyst in the Office of the Director of Procurement for the Department of Defense in 1971-1974. Previously, he served as an auditor in the United States Army.

Novick received his B.C.S. degree in 1963 from Benjamin Franklin University in Washington, D.C. He also received a diploma in 1971 for a year's study at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.

Novick and his wife, Judith, and three children, live in Washington, D.C. He was born in Brooklyn, New York.
