Steven D. Jellinek

Biography
[EPA press release - October 14, 1977]

Steven D. Jellinek has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the Environmental Protection Agency's first Assistant Administrator for Toxic Substances.

Jellinek, 37, will direct EPA's programs for assessing and controlling toxic substances. In addition, he will be responsible for the Agency's pesticides program, currently a part of the Office of Water and Hazardous Materials.

EPA Administrator Douglas M. Costle said, "I am extremely pleased that Steve will serve in this new and difficult job. In the next few years he will face the challenge of protecting public health and the environment from harm without unduly burdening the vital and socially beneficial chemical industry. His background in public administration and environmental policy makes him eminently qualified to meet this difficult task."

Since 1971, Jellinek has been with the President's Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ), where he was Staff Director for the last four years. From 1967 to 1971, he was Staff Assistant and then Special Assistant to the Internal Revenue Service's Assistant Commissioner for Compliance. Prior to that, he held various personnel management and administrative positions with the IRS.

Jellinek graduated from the University of Rochester in 1960 with an A.B. degree in Political Science. The following year he received his M.A. in Public Administration from Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. From 1969 to 1970, he was a Public Affairs Fellow at Stanford University.

Jellinek is married to Roberta R. Maydeck. The Jellineks have two daughters, Andrea, 9, and Rachel, 6, and live in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
