J. Charles Fox

Biography

J. Charles Fox was named Associate Administrator by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Carol M. Browner in February 1997. He directs the Agency's new Office of Reinvention which directs the Common Sense Initiative, Project XL, and other regulatory reinvention efforts. The Office is dedicated to finding cleaner, cheaper, and smarter solutions to the environmental challenges facing the nation.

Prior to serving as Associate Administrator of EPA, Mr. Fox served as the Assistant Secretary and Chief Operating Officer of the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE). MDE is Maryland's principal environmental regulatory agency with responsibilities for air and water pollution control, wetlands protection, waste management, and mining. Prior to joining MDE, he served as the Chief of Staff to the EPA's Office of Water and as a Special Assistant to the EPA Administrator.

Before his tenure at EPA, Mr. Fox served with a number of non-profit environmental organizations including American Rivers, Friends of the Earth, and the Environmental Policy Institute. He served on the Boards of Directors and as a consultant to other organizations including the Nature Conservancy, Sierra Club, and Maryland League of Conservation Voters.

Mr. Fox holds a Bachelor of Science Degree (1983) in Urban Geography from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, and he attended New York University in New York City. He resides with his wife in Annapolis, Maryland.
