Stephen J. Gage

Stephen J. Gage, 37, has been confirmed by the Senate to be Assistant Administrator for Research and Development of the Environmental Protection Agency.
EPA Administrator Douglas M. Costle said Gage in his new post would direct all Agency research activities covering air, water, toxic substances, radiation, energy, pesticides and solid waste.
Gage's most recent position was that of Deputy Assistant Administrator for Energy, Minerals and Industry in the Office of Research and Development at EPA. He joined EPA in 1974 as the Acting Director of the Office of Energy Research.
Gage served from 1971 to 1972 in the Natural Resources Group of the White House Office of Science and Technology as a White House Fellow. He specialized in energy resources, energy conservation technology and environmental effects of energy resource extraction, conversion and use.
He then served as senior staff member for energy programs at the Council on Environmental Quality. From 1972 to 1974 he was a member of the Council's Federal Impact Evaluation Staff.
In 1965, Gage joined the faculty of the mechanical engineering department of the University of Texas at Austin. In 1966 he became director of the University's Nuclear Reactor Laboratory.
Gage was born September 27, 1940, in Palisade, Nebraska. He received a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Nebraska (1962). He received an M.S. (1964) and Ph.D. (1966) from Purdue University in nuclear engineering.
Gage succeeds Wilson K. Talley.
