Jack E. Ravan
Biography

The U.S. Senate today confirmed the appointment of Jack E. Ravan as Assistant Administrator for Water for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Ravan had previously served for six years as Regional Administrator of EPA's Southeastern Region, where he administered a wide range of programs including contract authority for approximately $2 billion for construction of wastewater treatment plants.
"The confirmation of this experienced and professional manager will greatly enhance our ability to carry out the mandates of the Clean Water Act and the many complex projects associated with it," said EPA Administrator William D. Ruckelshaus. "We are delighted to have Jack back with the agency."
Ravan, 46, was Regional Administrator of EPA's Region 4, headquartered in Atlanta, Ga., from 1971 to 1977, directing programs involving eight states. During this period he also served as a member of the Ohio River Basin Commission, by Presidential appointment.
Since 1982 he has been Vice President, project development, for the Signal Clean Water Corp. Of Atlanta, Ga. And from 1980-82 was Director of the Alabama Department of Energy. He served on the executive management committee and as director of business development for Jordan, Jones & Goudling of Atlanta from 1977-80.
Prior to his service with EPA's Regional Office, Ravan was special assistant to the Federal co-chairman of the Coastal Plains Regional Commission from 1970-71, and was administrative assistant to Senator Strom Thurmond of South Carolina from 1969-70. He was a technical manager with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration 1968-69.
A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy (in the top 15 percent of his class in leadership) in 1959, he served for eight years in the Army and rose to the rank of Captain. He led a helicopter unit combat command in Vietnam and later was Assistant Director of Academics at the Army Signal School, Fort Monmouth, N.J.; Intelligence Officer for the 82nd Airborne Division, and Commander of a Combat Area Signal Company in Germany.
Ravan is a native of Easley, S.C. He and his wife, Roberta, and three children reside in Dunwoody, Ga.
