Lester A. Sutton of Sharon, Massachusetts, has been appointed New England Regional Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The appointment was announced today by the Agency's Deputy Administrator, Dr. John Hernandez.
As Regional Administrator, Sutton will coordinate the federal government's major environmental programs in New England. He will administer programs dealing with air and water pollution control, solid and hazardous waste management, pesticides, radiation, and toxic substances.
Sutton will head up EPA's activities in Region 1, which is headquartered in Boston, and takes in the states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
In announcing the appointment at an EPA staff meeting at Faneuil Hall, Dr. Hernandez noted that Sutton has more than 25 years extensive professional experience in all aspects of environmental engineering and management.
"Les's technical experience coupled with his administrative abilities makes him uniquely qualified to administer EPA's programs in the New England states," Hernandez commented.
Sutton has been with the Regional EPA office since its inception in 1971. For the past two years, he has served as the Regional EPA's Senior Project Manager. In this capacity he was responsible for the planning, management, and implementation of major urban water pollution control projects in Boston, Mass., Providence, R.I., and New Haven, Conn. Previously he has served as the Region's Water Division Director and headed the Region's Air and Water Program Division when the Agency was first created. He also has had extensive experience with the U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and U.S. Public Health Service.
Sutton holds a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree from City College of New York and a Master of Civil Engineering with a specialty in Environmental Engineering from New York University. He is a Licensed Professional Engineer and a member of numerous professional associations.
