Edwin B. Erickson

Biography
[EPA press release - April 21, 1989]

EPA Administrator William K. Reilly has named Edwin B. ("Ted") Erickson to be the new Regional Administrator for Region 3, which is headquartered in Philadelphia. He succeeds James Seif, who resigned in January.

Erickson will head the agency's activities in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Reilly said, "Ted Erickson's scientific and administrative background eminently qualify him for the job of Regional Administrator. He'll make great strides in EPA's Region 3 in carrying forward the President's mandate: strengthened enforcement of our environmental laws, pollution prevention, wetlands protection, Superfund site cleanups and other environmental priorities."

Erickson, 50, most recently was Delaware County Council Chairman, with responsibility for a county government that includes a budget of approximately $150 million and a workforce of 2,500 people. He also currently is chairman of the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, founder and chairman of Delaware County Human Services Partnership, a member of the advisory committee for EPA's Folcroft Landfill/Tinicum Marsh Environmental Study and active in many community groups.

Erickson holds a doctorate in biochemistry and microbiology from Bryn Mawr College in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. He was a faculty member at Drexel University in Philadelphia, a tenured assistant professor of biology at Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., and Director of Public Health and Chief Administrative Officer if Upper Darby Township, Pennsylvania. From August 1983 through April 1984, he served as liaison between the Governor's Office in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the EPA for the Chesapeake Bay Program. This joint program includes efforts by Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, the District of Columbia and EPA to protect and restore the Bay.
