Biography

The White House announced today the appointment of Jeanne M. Fox as Administrator of EPA Region 2 and Peter H. Kostmayer as Administrator of EPA Region 3.

EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner said, "Jeanne Fox and Peter Kostmayer bring to the Agency a wealth of expertise. Jeanne Fox has been involved in environmental issues for 20 years, dating back to an internship and law clerkship at EPA, and has a broad understanding of the issues at the state level in various positions over 13 years with New Jersey agencies. During his 14 years in Congress, Peter Kostmayer led the fight on many environmental fronts. Their skills will be an asset to the Agency as we continue to address EPA's aggressive environmental agenda."

Region 2 includes New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Region 3 includes the District of Columbia, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.

Kostmayer was the Democratic representative from Bucks an Montgomery Counties, Pennsylvania, in the U.S. House of Representatives for 14 years (1977-81 and 1983-93). He was extensively involved in environmental issues as a member of the Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs and the Energy and Commerce Committee, where he chaired two subcommittees. He wrote legislation to protect the Delaware and Allegheny Rivers and to permit "debt for nature" trades for the protection of rain forests. He initiated congressional action to add more than 2,000 acres to the Gettysburg National Park.

Kostmayer was a journalist and a press secretary before running for office at age 30. He resides in Bucks County and Washington, D.C., and is an alumnus of Columbia University (1971).
