Clifford V. Smith
Biography

Russell E. Train, Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, today announced the appointment of Dr. Clifford V. Smith as Administrator of the Agency's Region 10 Office, headquartered in Seattle. Region 10 consists of Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.
Dr. Smith, who has more than 20 years experience in the environmental engineering and management field is currently serving as Deputy Administrator of EPA's New England Regional Office in Boston. He has been with the Agency since 1971 and last year received EPA's highest award--a Gold Medal for exceptional service to the Agency.
Prior to joining the EPA, Dr. Smith was an associate professor of Civil and Enforcement Engineering at City University of New York and a consulting engineer with Dorr-Oliver, Inc. of Stamford, Connecticut and Bazen and Sawyer Engineers of New York.
From 1968 to 1970, he was manager of Sanitary Technology for Dorr-Oliver. He is also a former chief Engineer of the Water Supply Section of the Pennsylvania Department of Public Health and has held teaching posts at a number of colleges and universities.
Dr. Smith holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil and Sanitary Engineering from the State University of Iowa (1954) a Master of Science Degree in Sanitary Engineering and Water Resources from Johns Hopkins University (1960); and a Doctorate in Radiological Science and Sanitary Engineering from Johns Hopkins (1966).
He is a registered professional engineer, the author of numerous technical papers and a member of a number of technical and honor societies including the American Society of Civil Engineers, Water Pollution Control Federation, American Water Works Association and the Inter-National Association for Water Pollution Research.
A native of Washington, D.C., Dr. Smith currently resides in Carlisle, Massachusetts, with his wife and three daughters.
He replaces James L. Agee as Administrator of Region 10. Agee is now Acting Assistant Administrator for Water and Hazardous Materials for EPA.
