The National Safety Council (NSC), in partnership with EPA, sponsors the annual National Radon Poster Contest for children ages 9 to 14 to encourage testing of homes for radon. Entries are accepted from July 1 through October 15. First, second and third place winners are announced in January. The winners, a parent, and the sponsoring teacher receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, DC, in January.

The 2008 National Radon Poster Contest was conducted in 2007. The winners were announced on January 10, 2008 at the Radon Awards & Recognition Ceremony hosted by EPA. NSC received nearly 2,000 entries from 26 states and two U.S. Department of Defense schools for the 2008 National Radon Poster Contest. This is more than double the number of entries received for the 2007 National Radon Poster Contest conducted in 2006.

Participate in the 2009 National Radon Poster Contest and plan a related event to promote radon risk reduction in your community.  Host an awards ceremony, school assembly or another special event for your state or local poster contest winners. Contact Kristin Lolmaugh at lolmaugk@nsc.org to order a no-cost toolkit to help you plan and implement a local poster contest awards ceremony.

Radon Action Week is October 19-25, 2008

Radon Action Week is traditionally the third full week in October. It can be an ideal time to plan or kick-off events/activities that can build momentum toward January.

Special Radon Messages

As you conduct radon outreach throughout the year, consider incorporating radon messages along with other environmental health messages and special events. The following are some examples of seasonal messages you can use at different times of the year:

Collaborate with Experts from the Radon Professionals Speaker's Bureau

Contact radon professionals from the American Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists, Inc. (AARST) to speak at your event or field questions from the media. E-mail AARST (director@aarst.com) with requests or contact experts from the following Speaker’s Bureau lists. Mention of trade names, products, or services does not convey official EPA approval, endorsement, or recommendation.

Spanish Resources Available

EPA has the following resources available in Spanish to help you with your outreach efforts.

Order Radon Publications

EPA has a wide range of free radon outreach materials available to help support your activities. You can choose from educational brochures, guidebooks, reports, a map of radon zones, and other useful information. Many of these resources are available in English and Spanish.

Contact Your State Radon Program for Help

Your state radon program wants to work with you to help make your National Radon Action Month efforts a success. State radon representatives can help you plan your activities or provide additional radon collateral such as giveaways.
