Energy Efficiency

Building Design, Maintenance and Operations

Many energy efficiency upgrades can improve the quality of a school’s indoor environment, protecting and even enhancing IAQ without sacrificing energy performance. These upgrades that can lead to cost savings are not only compatible with promoting IAQ, but they can actually improve a school’s IAQ. However, if certain energy upgrades are not done correctly, they may adversely impact IAQ. Increased energy efficiency in building construction, for example, has resulted in tighter building shells and reduced ventilation rates, which have led to unhealthy IAQ in some buildings.

To learn more about energy efficiency upgrades and IAQ effects, download the Fact Sheet: Energy Efficientcy and IAQ Fact Sheet (PDF) (5 pp, 553K, About PDF), which was developed by the Indoor Environments Division and ENERGY STAR.
