1) New Federal Partnership to Foster Innovative Watershed Solutions
EPA and the Corps of Engineers have signed an agreement to facilitate joint work in watersheds. The agreement, which combines the organizational strengths and capabilities of each agency, recognizes the need to address water resource challenges on a watershed basis and will promote the development of innovative approaches to water resource and watershed management. Other objectives include facilitating sustainable economic development, ensuring communication among all stakeholders, and enhancing data exchange between the agencies.

2) Clean Diesel Retrofit Program Expands to China
With the number of vehicles increasing, China is experiencing dramatic increases in air pollution. In Beijing alone, more than 1,000 vehicles are being added to the roads every day. To help address these air impacts, EPA is working with the China State Environmental Protection Administration, the Beijing Environmental Protection Bureau and other organizations to retrofit a select fleet of buses and trucks with clean diesel technology. By using cleaner fuel and new technology, which can be installed rapidly and inexpensively on existing vehicles, this retrofit demonstration project will reduce particulate emissions and other air pollutants from the fleet by 40 percent or more.

3) EPA Purchasing More Green Power
EPA has announced a new Green Power transaction for its facilities in Research Triangle Park, N.C. The procurement, which involves power from a biomass (pulp and paper) source, represents EPA's largest Green Power purchase, to date. Under a three-year contract with Unicoi Energy Services of Marietta, Ga., EPA will purchase 100 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewable energy certificates (RECs) annually. This transaction increases EPA's annual Green Power purchases to more than 220 million kWh - an amount that equals 78 percent of the Agency's total electricity needs.

4) Schools Join EPA to Improve Indoor Air Quality
More than 500 school representatives and health, technical and environmental experts came together December 2 - 4, to discuss ways of ensuring a safe and healthy learning environment for millions of American school children. The Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools National Symposium enabled participants to discuss how to identify and resolve indoor environmental problems in schools. During the event, EPA also announced national awards for 22 schools and school districts that have implemented exemplary Indoor Air Quality programs.

5) New Contracts to Increase Environmentally-Responsible Disposal of Computers by Federal Agencies
EPA has awarded its first contracts to help all federal agencies with environmentally responsible disposal of computers and other used electronic equipment The U.S. Government disposes of approximately 10,000 computers every week. This equipment can end up in storage closets, warehouses and landfills, or overseas where generally the environmental standards are lower. It contains toxic materials such as lead, mercury, chromium, cadmium, and beryllium, which, if mishandled, could be released into the environment. The complex waste stream poses management issues and potential liability concerns for federal facilities. The new contracts will help agencies address these challenges by providing a dependable method for properly recycling or disposing of excess or obsolete equipment.
