Partnership with China
At the second meeting of the Joint Committee on Environmental Cooperation (held in Beijing on December 14, 2007), EPA and SEPA identified the following as priorities for cooperation in the next two years:

clean transportation fuels and pollution control technologies and standards;
-
further collaboration on regional air quality management;
-
institutional and capacity building for SO2 emissions trading in the power sector of China;
-
consultations on radioactive environmental monitoring and management;
-
source water protection technologies in watershed areas;
-
follow-up on the Hospital Mercury Management Project through the introduction and expansion of mercury reduction in other hospitals, with an emphasis on Beijing;
-
continued cooperation on new chemical substances;
-
efforts to ensure that officials have appropriate legal tools and incentives to prevent and control pollution, including stronger penalties for violating environmental requirements; and
-
capacity-building for emergency response to pollution accidents.
