Federal vs. State: Federal
Description: This is a summary of the annual report on EPA's most recent evaluation of air pollution trends in the United States. The focus of the report is on the status and trends in the ambient air concentrations and emissions of six pollutants (carbon monoxide, lead, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, particulate matter, and sulfur dioxide) for which EPA has established national ambient air quality standards. EPA also identifies air quality trends related to toxic air pollutants (e.g., benzene, methylene chloride, and mercury), visibility impairment, and acid rain.
