EPA and the energy crisis in Brazil
Brazil officially declared an energy crisis in the second quarter of 2001. Long-term
drought reduced hydroelectric capacity while a healthy economy led to
increased consumption. In response, the Brazilian government passed a series of measures
requiring electricity use reductions. The US EPA is supporting this effort by
working with PROCEL (Programa Nacional de Conservação de Energia Elétrica) to transfer experience with ENERGY
STAR labeled products to the Selo PROCEL.
eeBuildings traveled to São Paulo in September 2001 to research international use of the US EPA Benchmarking Tool and to learn how companies are adapting to electricity rationing. Several buildings participated in the benchmarking pilot. The most significant finding was the amount of energy that can be saved by motivated people and organizations. Several companies reported that they had significantly exceeded the 20% reductions required by the Brazilian government measures.
