National Science Foundation, Office of Polar Programs

Photo of NSF facilities in Antarctica

The National Science Foundation's (NSF) Office of Polar Programs hopes to save resources and funds by incorporating sustainable designs into three unique laboratories located in Antarctica. NSF faces a unique challenge as it attempts to maintain sustainability in a harsh environment where all resources must be generated, consumed, and disposed of by the users. NSF has a number of design options planned for incorporation into these facilities with hopes of garnering cost savings that will be directed back to the true heart of the organization: the research.

The Office of Polar Programs (OPP) manages and initiates National Science Foundation funding for basic research and operational support in the Arctic and the Antarctic. The funds are provided as NSF grants to institutions (mainly U.S. universities), whose scientists perform the research at the institutions or in a polar region, and as cooperative agreements or contracts to support organizations including contractors and the U.S. military.
