What's on Your Walls? -- National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week -- October 18-24, 2009

As part of National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, many states and communities plan to offer free lead screening, and to conduct various education and awareness events. Below is a list of some of the awareness activities going on around the United States during Lead Poisoning Prevention Week:

Connecticut

  • October 22, 2009 -- Kick-Off Meeting. The Connecticut Department of Public Health's Lead Poisoning Prevention and Control Program will hold a Semi-Annual Lead Meeting as a kick-off to National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week. The meeting will be held at the Department of Transportation in Newington, Connecticut. Attendees will include sanitarians, case managers, health educators, directors of health, medical providers, and various other lead professionals.   • October 25-31, 2009 -- Governor's Proclamation, Banner and Press Releases, throughout Connecticut. The Connecticut Department of Public Health's Lead Poisoning Prevention and Control Program arranged for a Governor's Proclamation to be distributed throughout Connecticut for National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week (NLPPW). A large banner will be on display across from the state capitol in downtown Hartford announcing NLPPW in the state of Connecticut. Additionally, written press releases will be distributed to local newspapers during NLPPW in Connecticut. For further information, contact James M.   • October 27-November 2, 2009 -- Coloring Contest. Stamford, CT. The Connecticut Department of Public Health's Lead Poisoning Prevention and Control Program (LPPCP) in collaboration with the Stamford Health Department will hold a coloring contest throughout Stamford kindergarten and first grade classrooms on Tuesday, October 27, 2009, and Wednesday, October 28, 2009. The LPPCP staff will visit every classroom and give a fun, educational lead poisoning prevention in-service and also distribute the contest materials, rules, and instructions. The deadline for contest submissions is Monday, November 2, 2009. A 2010 calendar will be made with the winning entries. In conjunction with the distribution of the calendars (to all participating students and faculty members) an awards assembly will be held for the students with the winning submissions. Maine

  • October 23-25, 2009 -- Day Care Education. The Passmaquoddy Indian Township will distribute copies of the Animated Mother Bear DVD "How Mother Bear Taught the Children About Lead" and have Robbie Racoon teach children about the four tips for staying lead-safe: 1. Wash your hands before you eat. 2. Leave your outside shoes at the door. 3. Don't eat non-food items. 4. Eat healthy. For further information, contact Trevor White 207-287-2187.

Massachusetts

  • October 23-25, 2009 -- Outreach. Boston, MA. The EPA Lead Program will host a Lead Awareness Outreach and show case "Don't Spread Lead" video, "Lead Safety" video and the Animated Mother Bear DVD "How Mother Bear Taught the Children About Lead."   • November 18-20, 2009 -- Symposium. "Putting EPA's Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule into Practice." The symposium is co-sponsored by the New England Lead Coordinating Committee (NELCC) and the Consortium of North East States and Tribes (CONEST). New Hampshire

  • October 9, 2009 -- Presentation. Concord, NH. "Protecting Your Tenants' Health: New EPA Rules for Lead Paint," sponsored by the New Hampshire Association for Justice (NHAJ).   • October 19-23, 2009 -- Outreach to Pediatricians. Throughout Rhode Island. The Rhode Island Department of Health will mail out a lead newsletter to all pediatricians in the state. The articles in the newsletter will address screening issues, the Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule that goes into effect in April 2010, home visiting for lead-poisoned children, and healthy housing efforts focused on lead.   • October 15-16, 2009 -- Workshop. Philadelphia, PA. At the National Mid-Year Conference on Eliminating Childhood Lead Poisoning, Implementing Healthy Homes Programs, and Combating Indoor Environmental Hazards. EPA will conduct a two-part workshop: How to Put EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule to Work in Your Community (10:00 am to 12:45 pm). In the first part of the workshop, EPA officials will review the requirements and timetable of the RRP Rule and answer questions about the implementation of the rule. In the second part of the workshop, presentations will cover ways in which communities can build contractor capacity through training, and how aspects of the rule can be strengthened through local and state regulations.   • October 26-30, 2009 -- Contest. Throughout Pennsylvania. As part of an effort to increase lead poisoning awareness, Region 3 will hold a poster contest for the children of EPA employees during National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week. Posters entered into the contest will be required to express the dangers of lead poisoning and exhibit methods of prevention.   • October 31, 2009 -- Lead Outreach. Philadelphia, PA.   • November 9, 2009 -- Conference. Philadelphia, PA. The EPA Lead program will attend the American Public Health Association conference in Philadelphia to review the requirements and timetable of the Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule and answer questions about implementation of the rule.   • October 22, 2009 -- Conference. Wheaton, IL. Illinois Lead Poisoning Prevention and Healthy Homes Conference. This conference is being held to assist environmental professionals, renovation contractors, and housing property managers in identifying home health risks and improving maintenance and remodeling practices while maintaining a healthy home environment for occupants. Sessions focusing primarily on exposure to lead and home toxicants and the short- and long-term health effects as a result of these exposures will be presented. This conference will include information on the new U.S. EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule, effective April 2010, which will impact contracting opportunities, methods, and facility management obligations. The objective will be to identify households with children 0-6 years of age, conduct visual risk assessments on the exterior of homes and provide residents with information about lead poisoning prevention resources. Michigan

  • October 27, 2009 -- Conference. Atlanta, GA. Panel on West Michigan Children's Environmental Health Pilot at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Environmental Public Health Conference, Atlanta, GA. Three presentations will be presented by pilot partners. Presentations will include formation of the coalition, development and use of an environmental health indicators matrix, and U.S. EPA lessons learned.
