Landfill Gas Energy Projects Protect Health while Fueling Industry and Job Creation
(01/19/2011) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today recognized six landfill methane capture projects for their creative use of landfill gas in generating renewable energy and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The winners, announced at the 14th Annual Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) Conference in Baltimore, MD include a project that powers manufacturing at a green business park in Indiana, and a 10 megawatt combined cycle power plant in Ohio. These projects contribute to job creation, and provide energy savings and green power generation.

Landfills Turn Trash into Power and Greenhouse Gas Reductions
(01/12/2010) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today recognized eight landfill methane capture projects for their innovation in generating renewable energy and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The winners, announced at the 13th Annual Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) Conference in Baltimore, MD include one of the largest landfill gas (LFG) to liquefied natural gas facilities in the world, located in Livermore, CA.

EPA Recognizes Partners for Pursuing Renewable Energy Through the Creative Use of Landfill Gas
(01/13/2009) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recognized the latest accomplishments of landfill methane partners who have reduced emissions of methane and created renewable energy. The partners accepted awards at EPA's 12th Annual Landfill Methane Outreach Program Conference and Project Expo in Baltimore, MD.

Tennessee Celebrates Two New LFG Energy Projects in One Week
(08/2011) In August 2011, two landfill gas (LFG) energy projects went on line in Tennessee. Victoria Ludwig, LMOP Territory Manager, spoke at both ribbon-cutting ceremonies for these projects, which were celebrated during the same week. The Leaf Chronicle highlighted the project at Bi-County Landfill in its article “Gas Collection Pays off at Montgomery County Landfill” while Blount Today reported on the project at the Alcoa/Maryville/Blount County Landfill in “New Conversion System Creates Power from Landfill Gas.”
The Environmental Magazine Publishes Article on the Energy Potential of Landfill Gas
(05/01/2011) The Environmental Magazine’s article “Putting Landfill Gas to Good Use” presents the energy potential and environmental benefits of landfill gas recovery, and discusses the high-Btu project at Fresh Kills Landfill in New York. Chris Godlove, LMOP Territory Manager, was interviewed for the article.
PublicWorks Magazine Features Biosolids Article
(01/2011) PublicWorks published an article co-authored by Victoria Ludwig, LMOP Territory Manager, entitled Self-sustaining Biosolids Drying (PDF) (3 pp, 2 MB About PDF). The article describes how solid waste and wastewater authorities are joining forces to limit energy costs by using landfill gas (LFG) to dry biosolids. Successful operations in Palm Beach County, Florida and Fairfax County, Virginia are featured.
Mason County Turns Trash Into Power
(04/14/2010) Misty Maynard, from the Ledger Independent, covered a story about LMOP Energy Partner East Kentucky Power Cooperative's new landfill gas (LFG) energy project at the Maysville-Mason County Landfill in Maysville, Kentucky. The LFG is being used to provide electricity to homes in the area. Victoria Ludwig, from LMOP, spoke at the dedication ceremony about the benefits of using LFG.
Energy Today Features Landfill Gas Story
(04/01/2010) In April, Energy Today featured a landfill gas (LFG) article, "On the Rise", in which EPA's Landfill Methane Outreach Program was highlighted as a resource for helping to get LFG energy projects up and running. Victoria Ludwig, from LMOP, was also interviewed about the benefits of using LFG.
Associated Press Highlights Altamont Landfill Project
(01/05/2010) The Associated Press wrote an article highlighting Waste Management’s new Altamont landfill
gas-to-liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant. Located in California, the plant produces 13,000 gallons a day of LNG, which is used to fuel garbage and recycling trucks.
University of New Hampshire’s EcoLine™
(12/2009) University of New Hampshire's EcoLine™, a landfill gas energy project that uses purified methane gas to power the campus, was completed in May 2009. The five million square-foot campus will receive up to 85 percent of its electricity and heat from landfill gas. The University has posted information about the project, including a video and animation illustrating how it works, on its Office of Sustainability website.
New Financing Options and Incentives for Landfill Gas Energy
(11/2009) Chris Godlove, LMOP Territory Manager, and Amanda Singleton, Eastern Research Group, wrote New Financing Options and Incentives for Landfill Gas Energy (PDF) (6 pp, 69K, About PDF) to outline possible funding incentives to implement landfill gas energy projects. These financing options include using carbon markets, renewable energy credits, and tax incentives. The paper was written for the 2009 World Energy Engineering Conference, which is hosted by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE). LMOP Special Supplement in MSW Management
(11/2009) In the November-December 2009 issue of MSW Management, LMOP contributed a variety of articles as part of a special supplement. Articles include how LMOP and its Partners are helping the United States fight global climate change as well as providing a clean, renewable source of energy for our homes and businesses. Additional article topics include incentives for green power resource, benefits of direct-use projects, the role of carbon credits, projects at small landfills, and an overview of efforts at the international level to promote LFG energy.
High-Btu LFG Energy Trend Highlighted in Waste Age
(09/2009) Waste Age published an LMOP-authored article entitled “On the Rise” that discusses the growing trend in high-Btu LFG energy projects. The article cites three key factors that have contributed to this increase: low wholesale electricity prices, high natural gas wholesale prices, and improvements in gas separation technologies.
More Recognition for LMOP Winners
(04/2008) As a demonstration of its pride in the winners of this year's LMOP landfill gas energy awards, LMOP authored an article in the April 2008 issue of Waste Age to provide further recognition of its Partner accomplishments. The article presents case studies of the award winners, which represented both small and large landfills, used a variety of innovative project structures, applied state-of-the-art technology, and found diverse applications for landfill gas.

LFG Energy Combined Heat & Power
(09/2007) The September 2007 issue of Cogeneration and On-Site Power Production includes "Garbage In, Energy Out—Landfill Gas Opportunities for CHP Projects." Authored by LMOP's Brian Guzzone and Mark Schlagenhauf, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the article discusses the advantages and opportunities that landfill gas cogeneration projects present. LMOP and USAID are working through the Global Methane Initiative to advance methane emissions reductions through the development of landfill gas recovery and utilization.
Biocycle Covers U.S. LFG Trends
(09/2007) The September 2007 issue of Biocycle includes the LMOP-authored article "Landfill Gas Use Trends in the United States." LMOP provides the latest statistics regarding landfill gas energy projects and discusses current market drivers for their development, such as high energy prices and desire for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
CNN Highlights Interface's LFG Energy Project
(05/04/2007) On May 4, 2007, and throughout the following days, CNN featured LMOP Energy Partner Interface Inc.'s LFG energy project. The carpet manufacturer utilizes methane piped from the city of LaGrange, Georgia's landfill to offset some of its natural gas consumption.
