Environmental BenefitsCarbon sequestered annually by 29,300 acres of pine or fir forests, annual greenhouse gas emissions from 23,600 passenger vehicles, or carbon dioxide emissions from 299,400 barrels of oil consumed. Annual energy savings equate to powering 1,900 homes. Estimated emissions reductions of 0.0351 million metric tons of carbon equivalents.

Horry County Solid Waste Authority joined efforts with the state-owned electric utility Santee Cooper to launch a very successful electricity project that came online in September 2001. The Horry County Landfill owns and operates the landfill gas and collection system and sells the gas to Santee Cooper.

Santee Cooper owns and operates three generators at the landfill site, providing approximately 3 MW of generating capacity to their power grid. The $4 million project provides electricity to Santee Cooper’s green power customers throughout South Carolina and exceeded the electric utility’s financial expectations.

The project’s highlights include:

  • First green power project in South Carolina.
  • Electricity powers approximately 9,300 residential customers.
  • 100 percent of the revenues from green power to be applied to future green power projects.
  • Horry County: LMOP Community Partner of 2001.
  • South Carolina Energy Office: LMOP State Partner of 2002.

Santee Cooper has signed agreements with at least three other landfills and expects to increase its green power output substantially.
