Renewable Energy Fund Grants
In 2008, the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation (RIEDC) began managing the state's Renewable Energy Fund (REF) with a stated commitment to support the state's green technology and renewable energy sectors. The fund provides grants for renewable energy projects that produce electricity in a cleaner, more sustainable manner and stimulate job growth in Rhode Island. According to legislative statute, the REF has $1 million set aside for local municipal renewable energy. These grants are capped at $500,000 per award. Up to an additional $200,000 is available for technical and feasibility studies.
Renewable energy systems eligible for the funding include facilities in the New England Power Pool control area that generate electricity using landfill gas, solar, wind, wave, tidal, ocean-thermal, geothermal, hydro, or sustainably managed biomass resources. Any municipality, non-profit organization, or legal business entity is eligible for a REF grant, as long as the project directly benefits Rhode Island.
Applications are available on RIEDC Web site. Applicants that submit proposals by March 31st will be notified of RIEDC's decision by June 30th of the same year; applicants that submit proposals by September 30 will be notified by December 31 of that same year.
