Map of Closed Shellfish Beds and Sewer Outfalls

The Acushnet River has remained off-limits to shellfishing since it was closed by the State Board of Health in 1904. Raw sewage still enters the harbor through combined sewer overflows (CSOs) during periods of high rainfall. Additional areas in the outer harbor were closed after the interceptor sewer line diverted wastewater to the outfall off Clarks Point. The classifications for shellfish closures in 1999 were collapsed into two groups: open (approved and conditionally approved) and closed (prohibited and restricted).
