P3 Research Project Search
Several organizations that partner with EPA's P3 Award competition have established their own awards to further recognize the accomplishments of the P3 Award teams. These awards recognize P3 teams in an area of specific interest to the award-giving organization. In previous years, these awards have included cash as well as in-kind services. These awards are completely independent of EPA's P3 Award and EPA is not involved in developing selection criteria or determining the winners. However, only P3 teams are eligible to receive these awards.
Organizations that have established these awards in previous years include: the Green Building Initiative, the International Center for Appropriate and Sustainable Technology, and the Institute for Sustainability Youth Council on Sustainable Science and Technology. These awards, in addition to EPA's P3 Awards, are presented at the conclusion of the National Sustainable Design Expo at the P3 Award ceremony.
American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Youth Council on Sustainable Science and Technology (YCOSST) | ASCE/EWB Sustainable Development Award | EcoMedia Award | Green Building Initiative Award | First Annual ICAST Award
YCOSST was formed by the partnership of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers’ (AIChE) Institute for Sustainability (IfS) and SustainUS, a nonprofit organization of young people advancing sustainable development and youth empowerment in the United States. YCOSST's mission is to build understanding of sustainability issues and principals, raise awareness of the science and technology behind sustainable choices, and develop grass roots campus efforts.
An award of $1,000 will be provided by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers-Institute for Sustainability (AIChE-IfS)to the team that best meets their criteria.
YCOSST Award Evaluation Criteria:
- Did research involve interdisciplinary collaboration?
- Were novel, innovative technologies used to facilitate distance communication during research?
- Were sustainable practices employed during research?
DEPLOYMENT TO REGIONS WITH LIMITED RESOURCES
- Can youth or people without significant financial ability or property rights obtain and use the device/invention?
- Are the materials locally produced and available to the general population?
- Can the device/invention be maintained locally?
- Can youth be an integral part of the implementation?
- Does the device/invention/finding directly benefit youth?
The YCOSST selection panel is comprised of knowledgeable young professionals in the sustainability movement. The YCOSST judges are Kat Dietrich, Meredith Irwin, Katelyn Keefe, Jonathan Monk, Katie Palanjian, and Aneri Patel. The Award will be presented by Jonathan Monk.
Judges for the 2009 AIChE/YCOSST Award:
Ms. Dietrich is a recent graduate of the University of Arizona earning a B.S. in Environmental Science. While at the University of Arizona, she was a NASA Space Grant intern and was active in campus leadership organizations. Ms. Dietrich currently works for an environmental consulting firm, where she provides analytic, communications and marketing, and education and outreach services for a range of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) programs focusing on environmental health. Her primary interests include environmental health, sustainability, and international development.
Ms. Irwin graduated Magna Cum Laude from the College of the Holy Cross with a B.A. in Biology. She currently works at an environmental consulting firm in Arlington, VA that supports the development and implementation of drinking water regulations for EPA’s Office of Ground Water and Drinking Water. She reviews surveys for EPA’s Drinking Water Needs Survey and Assessment and the Community Water Systems Survey. Ms. Irwin also reviewed state water maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) and state quality standards to assess the extent to which the states are using their authority under Clean Water Act (CWA) section 303 to protect drinking water supplies.
Katelyn Keefe, LEED AP
Ms. Keefe is an environmental consultant by profession, as well as an organizer and volunteer. She currently manages the Southeast Rebuild Collaborative (SRC), a program that assists southeastern states in adopting energy efficiency practices to achieve greenhouse gas emission reductions. She also works to improve indoor air quality (IAQ) through programs focused on children's health by engaging school districts around proactive IAQ management. At the national level, Ms. Keefe is active in SustainUS, coordinating the Citizen Science National, and serving as the Co-Chair of the YCOSST for the last two years. She is also active in local sustainability efforts, in Arlington, VA serving on the Board of Directors for Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment (ACE) and on the Executive Committee for DC EcoWomen. Her primary interests are organizational and institutional sustainability and energy efficiency.
Mr. Monk is a recent graduate from Princeton University with a B.S.E. in Chemical Engineering. He currently works as an Associate with the American Institute of Chemical Engineer’s Society for Biological Engineering. Mr. Monk also works with AIChE’s Institute for Sustainability and Energy Initiative. He is interested in applying engineering principles to energy sustainability. Mr. Monk is particularly interested in biofuels technologies.
Ms. Palanjian graduated with honors from Penn State University with a B.S. in Horticultural Science. She currently works as an environmental consultant on water quality projects. Previously, she worked as an analyst at an environmental laboratory in Southern California, where she tested water for inorganic contaminants. While an undergraduate researcher at Penn State, she conducted a research project on the effect of water-saving irrigation practices on grape plant physiology. Ms. Palanjian's primary interests are the environmental and human health impacts of drinking water and wastewater systems.
Aneri PatelMs. Patel graduated the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with honors in International Studies and a minor in Environmental Studies. She currently works at an environmental consulting firm in Arlington, VA, working on communications, outreach, and event planning projects. As an undergraduate, she interned at the Department of State’s Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs. Her main interests are sustainable development and conservation.
The ASCE National Capital Section, ASCE Committee on Sustainability and the Engineers Without Borders DC Chapter jointly sponsor the ASCE/EWB Sustainable Development Award.
The $1,000 award recognizes the student team which best represents the project that solves a pressing need in a developing country. The selection criteria are:
- Use of local raw materials;
- Simplicity of design;
- Widespread impact on quality of life for the developing region.
Judges for the 2009 ASCE/EWB Sustainable Development Award:
Dr. Miriam Heller
Dr. Heller is currently a visiting Senior Fellow at EMBARQ, The World Resources Institute’s Center for Sustainable Transport. She has over 25 years of experience in environment and sustainability in the federal government, domestic and international industry, and academia where she has published over 40 articles and book chapters in these and related areas. She has been honored as AAAS Congressional Science and Engineering Fellow and Fulbright Senior Scholar in France. She is an ASCE member and has served on the TAC for Sustainability since 2001. She earned a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering and Systems Analysis at The Johns Hopkins University.
Robert C. Field, P.E., LEED AP
Mr. Field is a LEED Accredited Professional with over 15 years of technical experience designing and supervising the design of complex educational, research, commercial, industrial, institutional, and residential projects of structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, light gauge steel and timber. Through his management experience he has been responsible for design and construction administration, budgeting, and QA/QC. Mr. Field currently serves as Vice-Chairman of Structural Engineering Institute of ASCE's Sustainability Committee, which is currently working on a number of projects, the largest of which is the forthcoming Structural Engineer's Guide to Sustainability.
Tim GarlandMr. Garland is a Project Engineer at Whiting-Turner Contracting Company. He has been an EWB member since 2005 and served as Project Manager for the Santa Clara El-Salvador Project. Mr. Garland earned a degree in civil engineering from Catholic University of America.
EcoMedia® is an environmental media company focused on developing media products and services that will educate citizen-consumers about the health of our planet and how they can individually and collectively make a difference. The core of EcoMedia's media platforms is an educational outdoor signage campaign that is paid for by business sponsors.
Fifty-percent of the profits from this media are given back to the municipalities for them to use to improve water and air quality, build wonderful greenspaces and improve the quality of life in our communities.
The EcoZone® Project is the syndicated television show that comprises one of the core educational-entertainment platforms that EcoMedia is providing as part of their comprehensive public-private partnership. The show, which is focused on celebrity home "green" makeovers, premiered Earth Day weekend. More information about the show can be seen at www.ecozone.tv .
The EcoZone Project Award for 2007 consists of a monetary award in the amount of $1000. In addition, the winning team will work with The EcoZone Project Media Development team in the creation of a short video for inclusion on their multi-media site (www.ecozone.tv ) and potentially as a pod (small educational insert) in one of EcoZone's quarterly syndicated television series.
EcoMedia Award Evaluation Criteria:
The EcoZone Project award winner will have proposed, and will implement a project that demonstrates and builds on the theme of The EcoZone Project, which is that each citizen can make a difference every day for the health of our environment and that all age groups and life activities offer opportunity for living in a way that is fun, fulfilling, and healthy for the planet. The following criteria will be considered:
- Ability to influence the thoughts and habits of people in their everyday lives; this can include changing day to day habits or changing the way people view their work, school, or recreational activities.
- Ability for others to understand and implement the environmental outcomes.
- Ability for the team to demonstrate on film the benefits of their project, the way their project works, and how this might make a difference for the planet and its people.
- Ability for the project to attract and retain young people in a dialogue about the benefits and opportunities for change.
- Ability for the outcomes of the project to be publicized to a broader audience in a comprehensible and entertaining fashion.

The Green Building Initiative™ (GBI), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to "greening the mainstream" by promoting credible and practical approaches to green building, will recognize one participating team with a $1,000 award to further its work.
The award will be presented for the "Most Innovative Sustainable Commercial Design Project." The GBI will evaluate teams that submit projects focused on commercial design and address any of the seven areas of assessment from its innovative commercial construction rating and assessment tool, Green Globes™.
These seven areas of assessment are as follows:
- Project Management
- Emissions, Effluents and Other Impacts
- Indoor Environment
"Sustainable Design with Potential for Commercialization"
The International Center for Appropriate and Sustainable Technology will present an award to a student team for the design of a potential solution to a pressing need in developing communities worldwide. These needs may include energy efficiency, renewable energy, water quality and resource protection. In addition, the team must demonstrate this design can effectively accomplish the tasks for which it is intended and that it can be locally produced and sold as a viable business enterprise.
- Ease of replication
- Solution to a local problem with global implications
- Technical feasibility
- Economic viability
- Ability of team to commercialize the design
The ICAST award consists of a $1,000 cash prize for designing an effective technology and demonstrating the activities necessary to commercialize the design (ex. completing a design for manufacturability exercise, market feasibility study, business plan, etc.). In addition to the cash prize, a $10,000 in-kind award for services by the ICAST team will also be presented. The ICAST team possess business and engineering expertise that will assist the student team in implementing their design and planning activities leading to the commercialization of the design.
