Title: Evaluation of Chitosan Coagulation as a Sustainable Method for Point of Use Drinking Water Treatment in Developing Countries
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill students are experimenting with chitosan coagulation as a method of eliminating the three classes of pathogens that cause waterborne diarrheal disease: viruses, bacteria, and parasites. Chitosan, a biopolymer derived from crustaceans, is widely available and offers a sustainable, low-cost method for improving point-of-use water treatment systems.
Challenge Area(s): Water, Materials & Chemicals
