Title: Using and Integrated Approach of Rapid Microbial Detection Technology and Community Education to Reduce Waterborne Illness in Dar es Salaam Tanzania
University of California - Los Angeles students are developing a portable rapid detection method for pathogens and pathogen indicators for use in communities that lack access to a safe and clean water supply. The contamination in water supplies will be measured by immunomagnetic separation and ATP quantification, while the visual results will be used as a basis for educating community members on hygiene practices; these changes in behavior will be subsequently assessed by distributing health surveys.
Challenge Area(s): Water
