Title: Treatment and Generation of Useful Products from Aluminum Extraction Waste Materials

The process for extracting "virgin" aluminum produces a highly toxic waste called "red mud". This waste is usually stored in ponds that have the potential to leak into the surrounding environment causing significant environmental damage and threatening human health. A student team from Michigan Technological University is applying a unique low cost process that uses polymers to neutralize and bind particles of dried red mud into material that can be recycled into other products such as building materials and superabsorbents. The process has the potential to reduce the millions of metric tons of red mud produced every year by the aluminum industry.
