Title: Design and Implementation of a New Top-Lit UpDraft Stove (TChar) in Gressier, Haiti

Charcoal use, especially for cooking, is a major contributor to extensive deforestation in Haiti. Providing Haitians with a way to use cookstoves that burn locally available waste biomass as fuel would help to decrease charcoal demand and curb deforestation. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign students are improving the design of the Top-Lit Updraft cookstove for better performance as well as lower fuel use and emissions to foster broader acceptance of these stoves. The team is working directly with a Haitian community to support using local fuel sources and manufacturing the stove locally.
