EPA Grant Number: SU835355
Title: Marine Electricity From High Altitude Wind

There are more than 10 million boat engines operated in the Unites States, and they are among the highest contributors of air pollutants that cause respiratory diseases in many areas of the country. In response to the problem and EPA engine regulations, researchers are developing hybrid power technology for boats that is similar to technology for cars. Students at Rowan University are developing a prototype wind power system that uses a high-flying kite to power a boat while it idles or when it's low on fuel. By trapping wind to generate electricity and store it in an on-board battery, the system may reduce engine emissions and gas costs for boat owners.
