Evaluation of the College and University Initiative
The following are independent evaluations of the College and University Initiative that were based principally on feedback from participating New England institutions. One study was conducted by Industrial Economics, Inc. (IEc) through funding from EPA HQ. The other was conducted by graduate students from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University for EPA New England.
Each survey methodology was designed to meet particular objectives. The design and scope of the IEc study provided more detailed and quantitative analysis of data, while the Kennedy School approach provided more (qualitative) insight into colleges’ and DPWs’ motivations.
Both studies concluded that the Initiatives were successful although areas for improvement with respect to future sector needs are identified. Both studies also concluded that the Initiative met EPA’s own objectives and provided incentives (or disincentives) that met Environmental Health and Safety managers’ needs.
