New Water Discharge Permit for Mirant Canal Station Upgrades Environmental Protection

An updated permit governing discharge of waste water by the Mirant Canal Station power plant in Sandwich will provide better protections for the environment. The new requirements are contained in a Final National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit, developed jointly by EPA and the Massachusetts Dept. of Environmental Protection (MassDEP).
Two Mass. Seafood Companies Face Penalties for Hazardous Chemical Violations

Two seafood processing and freezing company located in Fall River, Mass. face monetary penalties for federal Emergency Planning and Community-Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) violations. EPA issued complaints on July 15, 2008 against Raw Seafoods, Inc. and Arctic Cold Storage Corporation alleging failure to provide local and state emergency responders with important information about the hazardous substances that the companies use at their facilities.
Protecting New England's Waters
EPA has taken action to improve coastal water quality in New England, by expanding "No Discharge" areas in Mass. waters. This means that boaters must ensure that sewage is pumped out of holding tanks, and not released directly into bays and the ocean
Conanicut Island Receives "Sole Source Aquifer" Designation

The drinking water supply of Conanicut Island has been designated as a sole source aquifer. Conanicut Island is located off the coast of Rhode Island in Narragansett Bay and includes the municipality of Jamestown.
