SALARY: Salary up to $200,000 per annum, dependent upon qualifications, experience and other factors.
DUTY LOCATION: EPA, Office of Research and Development, National Exposure Research Laboratory, Immediate Office, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.
AREA OF CONSIDERATION: Nationwide (All Sources). SPECIAL NOTE: ORD is filling this position using EPA’s Title 42 Authority, which offers up to 5-year renewable term appointments at highly competitive, market-based salaries. The position is part of a larger EPA effort to use state-of-the-science approaches and technologies in its mission of protecting human health and the environment.
The position is subject to the Ethics in Government Act of 1978. Appointment will be subject to applicant’s completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Also, appointment will be subject to applicant’s completion of a financial disclosure process which includes completing an SF-278, Public Financial Disclosure Report.
It is preferred that candidates be available to begin work by September 30, 2008.
HIGH-LEVEL CAREER OPPORTUNITY IN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH
EPA’s Office of Research and Development (ORD) is seeking an internationally recognized scientist to fill a position in the National Exposure Research Laboratory (NERL) http://www.epa.gov/nerl/, Immediate Office, located in Research Triangle Park, N.C.
Major Duties:
- Provides scientific leadership and expertise in the planning, development, organization, direction, and implementation of the national environmental health related exposure research programs. Specific areas of responsibility include research programs to develop exposure assessment data in support of air, soil, and drinking water quality criteria; to provide scientific data to quantify and evaluate human health exposures to environmental pollutants including pesticides, hazardous wastes, and other environmental toxicants; and to develop human population level exposure initiatives.
- Serves as an expert and principal scientific advisor to the Director, NERL, and as spokesperson/representative for ORD in the area of health exposure research. This includes participating on workgroups within and outside EPA, and representing EPA in collaborations and discussions with other federal, state, private, and international organizations engaged in programs within assigned major program areas.
- Identifies collaborative opportunities and helps to guide the research agenda of outside organizations with similar interests. This will be accomplished by working in close coordination with appropriate ORD management and staff.
- Provides leadership and direction to the three NERL health divisions. As Associate Director, the incumbent promotes innovation and creativity to advance the state-of-the-science. He/she will be held accountable for the success of the human exposure programs and will make major decisions and take significant actions to ensure that research efforts and resources promote the accomplishment of Agency program objectives.
- Coordinates health exposure research activities within EPA as well as with other Federal agencies, industry, academia, and private organizations sharing a mutual interest or responsibility within major program areas assigned to the National Laboratory. Serves in a leadership role by representing the Agency in conferences, personal discussions, field visits, and other coordinative and cooperative meetings pertaining to assigned program areas.
It is anticipated that approximately 5% of this position will consist of managing extramural resources which may include grants, cooperative agreements, contracts, interagency agreements, or memoranda of understanding.
QUALIFICATIONS
The individual selected for this position will provide leadership across ORD in environmental health sciences. He/she will be expected to lead a research program that is integrated with activities of the respective ORD laboratory or center, and serve as a spokesperson for that program.
To meet the eligibility criteria, an individual must have a doctoral-level degree in a pertinent science discipline, an outstanding track record of original research, and extensive specialized experience leading an environmental research program. In addition, the individual should be the recipient of recognition within the scientific community for original and significant contributions to research and high-impact collaborative efforts.
EVALUATION METHOD
Candidates will be evaluated on the basis of meeting the qualifications stated previously. In determining the degree to which candidates possess the required or desired knowledge, skills, and abilities, an evaluation panel will consider related experience, education, training, awards, and professional references.
