David C. Bencic

My current research focuses on using molecular methods, specifically changes in gene and protein expression, for the identification of ecological aquatic exposure indicators. I serve as a NERL lead for a computational toxicology project entitled, "Linkage of Exposure and Effects Using Genomics, Proteomics, and Metabolomics in Small Fish Models." I participate in the microarray and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (QPCR) analysis of zebrafish (Danio Rerio) and fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) samples. In addition, I perform two dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-D PAGE), specifically the fluorescence-based DIGE technology, for this project. Finally, I also use these molecular-based expression tools to collaborate with other EERD and EPA scientists to identify indicators of exposure to a variety of other chemicals, including emerging contaminants and pesticide/pesticide mixtures, in both laboratory and field experiments.
