National Land-Cover Dataset
The Upper White River study area (21,848 kmē) has a variety of
land-cover types throughout. Where calculations and models required
greater specificity than that of the customized 5-class land-cover
map, the National Land-Cover Dataset (NLCD) was used. The NLCD is
a land-cover data product derived from images acquired by Landsat's
Thematic Mapper sensor, as well as a number of ancillary data sources,
producing a view of land-cover in the conterminous United States, circa
1992. Applicable portions of the NLCD are used to assess landscape
condition among four 8-digit Hydrologic Unit Code (HUC) regions and 244
smaller subwatersheds of varying sizes, in an effort to determine the
vulnerability of water quality throughout the area.
