A new partnership between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Research and Development (ORD) and the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics at the University of Vermont will help decision makers more accurately weigh the costs and benefits of actions that alter ecosystem services -- the goods and services of nature such as clean air and water, erosion and flood control, soil enrichment, and food and fiber.
Settlement Ensures Better Sewage Treatment for Massachusetts Bay and Other Boston-area Waters

A judicial settlement reached between the United States and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA), will require a higher level of treatment for sewage reaching the Deer Island Treatment Plant before being discharged into Massachusetts Bay.

EPA has approved a request to designate Salem Harbor as a “No Discharge” area. This status means that discharges of treated and untreated boat sewage are prohibited within the Massachusetts state waters of Beverly, Danvers, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Marblehead and Salem.
Foxboro, Mass. Landlord to Pay Penalty and Take Steps to Reduce Risk of Lead Poisoning

Landlord Daniel J. Lynch will pay a fine and take action to reduce the risk of lead poisoning at an apartment building in Foxboro, Mass. This will settle EPA claims that Mr. Lynch violated lead paint disclosure laws when he rented apartments without providing tenants with lead paint disclosure information.
Pfizer To Pay $975,000 For Alleged Clean Air Violations at Connecticut Facility

The pharmaceutical company Pfizer Inc. has agreed to pay a $975,000 civil penalty to resolve alleged violations of the Clean Air Act at its former manufacturing plant in Groton, Conn., the Justice Department and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today. Today’s settlement is the first of its type in federal court under regulations that are designed to control the emissions of hazardous air pollutants from pharmaceutical manufacturing operations.
