Dr. William H. Benson Appointed NHEERL Associate Director for Ecology
The National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory (NHEERL) is pleased to announce that Dr. William H. (Bill) Benson, a widely respected leader both within and outside of EPA, has accepted the permanent role of Associate Director for Ecology. In this role, Bill will provide day-to-day leadership and coordination of the entire Ecology Effects Research Program, as well as work closely with his counterparts in the laboratories and centers.
Bill is especially well qualified for this role and is no stranger to NHEERL. He brings to us the insights and experience of a 14-year career at EPA as Division Director for NHEERL’s Gulf Ecology Division. Bill has served on various details since joining the Agency in 1999; most recently, he was the acting Associate Assistant Administrator for ORD, where he focused on working across ORD with our National Research Programs, Offices, Laboratories, and Centers to fully implement and institutionalize Path Forward objectives and tenets. He was integral in identifying cross-ORD research program priorities, as well as the integrated and transdisciplinary research vital to the future of environmental protection. In addition, Bill previously has served as Acting Chief Scientist in the Office of the Science Advisor and Interim Director of ORD’s National Exposure Research Laboratory. He has demonstrated extraordinary leadership within EPA, and I have no doubt that he will continue to bring his tremendous expertise, passion, and vision to this important new role. Bill is a past president of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
