NHEERL Scientist Played Large Role in International Conference on Environmental Mutagens
David DeMarini, a genetic toxicologist with the NHEERL Integrated Systems Toxicology Division's Genetic and Cellular Toxicology Branch, participated significantly in the 10th International Conference on Environmental Mutagens (10th ICEM) in Florence, Italy, August 20-25, 2009. There, Dr. DeMarini's highlighted EPA's drinking water research to an international assemblage of scientists and decisionmakers in the global public health arena.
While at the 10th ICEM, Dr. DeMarini co-chaired and gave a talk (titled "Genotoxicity and Carcinogenicity of Drinking Water Disinfection By-Products") in a symposium and co-chaired and spoke in two forums (talks titled "Evaluating the Mutagenicity of Air, Water, and Soil by the Salmonella Assay: Where Are We after 40 Years?" and "Global Outreach of Genetic Toxicology Training: The Experience of the Hollaender Courses and Human Populations Meetings"). Also, as president of the International Association of Environmental Mutagen Societies (IAEMS), Dr. DeMarini conducted a business meeting of that organization.
