NHEERL Scientist Organizes Symposium on Energy Production and Fisheries - Nashville, Tennessee; September 3, 2009
A symposium entitled "Energy Production and Fisheries in the Coastal Zone" will be presented September 3, 2009, at the Annual Meeting of the American Fisheries Society in Nashville, TN. The symposium, organized by Fred Genthner of NHEERL's Gulf Ecology Division (GED), will present research, management, and policy solutions that address linkages between coastal energy production and impacts on coastal fisheries, with the ultimate goal of sustaining fish populations and their habitats. The topic is timely because human population growth and associated energy production facilities are projected to increase at a disproportionately high rate in coastal watersheds. Effects, both negative and positive, from a variety of energy production facilities and sources, such as offshore wind farms, tidal power, hydropower, thermal generation, hydroelectric, biofuels, and nuclear power will be assessed. Almost any activity associated with energy production (traditional or emerging) can cause impacts on fisheries. Therefore, this symposium will be a platform for presentations describing factors that could contribute to declining fisheries, in addition to informing participants about how developing technologies are being designed to minimize potential adverse impacts. Presentations were selected to be of interest to both scientists and policymakers.
Two scientists from GED, Stephen Jordan and Michael Lewis, will be among the 18 participants at this symposium. They will present talks entitled "Biofuels and Fisheries: Risks and Opportunities" and "Energy Development and Near-Coastal Fish Assemblages in the Northern Gulf of Mexico," respectively.
