MED Director To Attend CSMI Steering Committee Meeting
Carl Richards, Director of NHEERL's Mid-Continent Ecology Division (MED), will be attending a meeting of the Coordinated Science and Monitoring Initiative (CSMI) Steering Committee in Windsor, Canada, on September 9 and 10, 2009. He, along with the other members of that committee will be developing upcoming meeting themes, organizing speakers to address the themes, and overseeing the conduct of the meeting. In addition, Dr. Richards also will participate in discussions regarding lake rotational/cyclical processes and assist the committee in developing outcomes and deliverables for the processes.
The CSMI Steering Committee meeting will be attended by managers and experts from various U.S. and Canadian natural resource organizations. This venue will provide Dr. Richards and the division with useful information on opportunities for future collaboration that will help expand the scope and interdisciplinary nature of EPA's research programs. Too, it will aid in identifying areas of potential collaboration, by informing MED of the results and priorities of various Federal, State, and provincial agencies around Lake Superior and the other Great Lakes, and by avoiding duplication of efforts conducted by others. EPA has primary responsibility, through the Clean Water Act and the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, to promote monitoring and assessment of Great Lakes habitats and watersheds.
