Sampling Radiochemical Analytes![]() The new procedure, Sample Collection Procedures for Radiochemical Analytes in Environmental Matrices, provides instructions and related safety information for collecting environmental samples to be analyzed for radiological contaminants following a contamination event or emergency. The document focuses on the site characterization, remediation, and final status phases of a contamination event. The procedure is designed for use when Federal Radiological Monitoring and Assessment Center (FRMAC) activities are given to EPA for site clean-up. The procedure describes sample collection, decontamination, and packaging. It is intended for use by sampling personnel who have been trained and who have experience in radiological sampling techniques and corresponding radiation safety practices. Specifically, the procedure provides information and instructions on:
EPA developed this and the Standardized Analytical Methods for Use During Homeland Security Events in support of Homeland Security Presidential Directives (HSPDs) which define EPA’s role in homeland security. EPA furnishes technical support for emergency responders, laboratories, and management. This radiological procedure also supports several of the Office of Radiation and Indoor Air’s missions: to direct an environmental radiation monitoring program, respond to radiological emergencies, and evaluate and assess the overall risk and impact of radiation.
