Air and Climate Change Research
EPA Risk Management Air Research has a long history of leveraging its resources with EPA Program and Regional offices, other Federal agencies, and through Cooperative Research and Development Agreements with industry. There are a number of other agencies and groups with significant research programs that address air pollution characterization and control issues. Of particular note are the Departments of Energy, Defense, Agriculture, and Transportation.
In addition to working collaboratively with many groups, we have recently stepped forward and played a leadership role in coordinating or conducting critical research activities that have national and international implications. Our Risk Management Air Pollution and Prevention Control Division (APPCD) is a leader working with DoD to identify areas for research investment under its Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) and has served as a co-chair of a group looking at research needed to comply with environmental requirements. We have worked closely with DOE and industry to become a leader in the area of mercury technology evaluations.
One of our staff took on the role of the Acting National Program Director for the EPA Office of Research and Development (ORD) Particulate Matter Program and worked to better integrate the efforts of the various labs and centers. Finally, we have worked with our colleagues in other ORD labs and outside researchers to lead the effort on evaluating various options to clean up anthrax contaminated buildings.
