Woolfolk Chemical Works Site, Fort Valley, GA
Woolfolk Chemical Works has contaminated the town of Fort Valley with lead and arsenic plus other COCs to the extent that the ATSDR has determined that life expectancy for the citizens within a mile radius around the plant has been shortened by an average of 5 - 10 years. The citizens had formed a TAG group and through their persistence have been able to encourage Region 4 to reexamine the site leading to a complete overhaul of the scope of the investigation and remediation strategies. The PRP has resisted the EPA from the start, having filed an inadequate RI/FS and RD/RA addressing only a haz-waste landfill and a minimum of contaminated soils on site. The tech support provided support for the Region to take over the site (which the PRP is still resisting). The result has been a large expansion of the area of contamination, a massive house and attic sampling and analysis program leading to many homes being cleaned to acceptable levels, and an improved comprehensive remediation strategy for the site and the landfill.
