Summary of Workshop on Biodegradation of MTBE (PDF) (45 pp, 488 KB) (EPA/625/R-01/001A) February 2001

A workshop was held in Cincinnati, Ohio, February 1–2, 2000, on biodegradation of methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE)-contaminated soils and ground water. The workshop was sponsored by the EPA's National Risk Management Research Laboratory and the American Petroleum Institute. Researchers in academia, industry, and government were invited to attend and present current research. The goals of the workshop were to:

  • Understand MTBE research being conducted by various organizations and the resulting conclusions
  • Identify the remaining research needs on MTBE biodegradability
  • Understand what research is being planned for the future and identify potential opportunities for collaboration

Numerous presentations are summarized in this report.
